Guest Speaker, Mr. Ron Holton
It's difficult to imagine the number and complexity of the risks associated with putting on one of the world's greatest sporting events, from construction overruns to terrorism to the whims of Mother Nature (what if there's no snow?). Hear first-hand how the organizing committee implemented its risk management program to keep the Games running smoothly.

Ron Holton was Vice President, Risk Management & Assurance Services, VANOC-Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and is now Chief Risk Officer at the University of British Columbia.

Off-Campus Activity and Travel Policy

The University's new policy on off-campus activity and travel will affect everyone who participates in activity away from any of the University's campuses. Although it does contain some new requirements, the policy is designed to make it easier to plan off-campus activity while helping ensure it is safe, productive and enjoyable. Make sure you bring your questions to the session, which will be led by Bob Picken, Manager of Insurance & Risk Assessment.

Presentation

Individuals at Risk and Urgent Cases (Section 91)
There are 50,000 of us here, in fairly close proximity, working and studying in what can be a stressful environment. Inevitably there will be individuals who may be at risk of doing harm to themselves or others. How do we identify at-risk people? What can we do to help them and protect ourselves?

The session will be led by Kris Fowler, Helping Individuals at Risk Coordinator, and Sgt Grace Berry of University of Alberta Protective Services.

Presentation

Serious Incident Case Study
Most of us take our safety for granted most of the time; it's easy to forget that things can quickly go badly wrong. Prof. Larry Kostiuk shares a story of a near miss in an engineering laboratory. With first-hand experience of lessons learned, this session is a must for anyone responsible for managing health and safety risk at the University. Prof. Kostiuk is Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
